Current Information:Enlisted-Twickenham Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium
On 16th June, 1917, 17th King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 117 Brigade, 39th Division, moved into the front line in the Hill Top sector in the northern part of the Ypres salient, facing St Julien, and they remained here until relieved on 24th June. The Battalion Diary recorded that, “whilst holding the line the trenches were heavily shelled, day after day” and it is very likely that this caused the death of Leonard Vernon who was killed on 21st June. |
